Freeing FromSoftware’s Engine on High-Refresh Displays
By default, Elden Ring hard-locks frame rates to 60 FPS and forces artificial black bars on 21:9 and 32:9 ultrawide monitors. While FromSoftware claims this is done for physics determinism, modern PC testing proves the animation engine scales gracefully up to 144 FPS without physics destabilization.
Step 1: The Safe Offline EAC Bypass Protocol
To avoid getting flagged by Bandai Namco’s server telemetry, always play uncapped in offline mode:
- Navigate to:
steamapps\common\ELDEN RING\Game - Create a text file named
steam_appid.txtand type1245620inside. - Rename
start_protected_game.exetostart_protected_game_original.exe. - Make a copy of
eldenring.exeand rename the copy tostart_protected_game.exe. - Launch the game directly from Steam. An in-game notification will confirm "Inappropriate activity detected. Starting in Offline Mode."
Step 2: Uncapping Frame Rate via Flawless Widescreen
Download the open-source Flawless Widescreen utility. Enable the Elden Ring plugin, check Framerate Unlock, and set your slider to match your display refresh rate (120Hz, 144Hz, or 165Hz). Ensure Fix Aspect Ratio is checked to fill ultrawide monitors edge-to-edge.
