How to Undervolt Modern GPUs with MSI Afterburner: 15°C Cooler & Zero FPS Loss
Step-by-step tutorial on voltage/frequency curve editor undervolting. Lower GPU core temperatures, quiet fan noise, and eliminate thermal throttling.
Why Undervolting Beats Overclocking on Modern GPUs
Modern graphics cards boost dynamically based on thermal and power limits. By lowering the voltage required for a target clock speed, the GPU operates cooler, preventing thermal downclocking and actually sustaining higher average framerates.
The 4-Step Curve Editor Process
- Open MSI Afterburner and press Ctrl + F to bring up the Voltage/Frequency Curve Editor.
- Identify your target stable frequency (e.g., 2,550 MHz on RTX 4070 or 2,600 MHz on RTX 4080).
- Locate the 950 mV (0.950V) voltage point and drag the dot up to match your target clock.
- Highlight all points to the right of 950 mV, hold Shift, and flatten them into a straight line. Click the checkmark in Afterburner to apply.
